Estate Planning Reflections from Hilton Head

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to travel to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where I was honored to present at the 77th Semi-Annual Collegium of the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys. The Collegium brings together estate planning attorneys from across the country to share ideas, learn from one another, and continue improving how we serve families.

Every time I connect with colleagues from around the country, I’m reminded just how common many of our clients’ questions really are. Families want to protect what they have built. They want to provide for the people they love. And they want to know that what matters most in their lives will continue long after they are gone.

During my presentation, I spoke about something that has become increasingly important in our work with families: the difference between material wealth and non-material wealth. Material wealth is what most people think of when they hear the words “estate planning’, their homes, investments, savings, and other assets. Those things are important, and good legal planning helps ensure they pass smoothly to the next generation.

But every family also possesses another kind of wealth that may be even more meaningful: their stories, traditions, values, and wisdom. Those are the things that shape who we are. They are the lessons we learned from parents and grandparents, the family recipes that show up at every holiday meal, the traditions that mark the seasons of our lives, and the memories that connect generations.

Because in the end, what you pass on should reflect not just what you owned, but who you were.
